AOSpine Education
Lifelong learning

It is never too soon or too late to learn. This is the core philosophy that drives AOSpine’s educational activities. In contrast to traditional teacher-directed courses, AOSpine’s programs are highly interactive and involve the learner, enabling spine care professionals to acquire the specific knowledge progressively to fit their needs and clinical practice. And by developing the mentoring skills of its faculty members, AOSpine ensures they are in a prime position to impart their know-how to the next generation of spine surgeons.

Each year, AOSpine runs over 120 educational events worldwide in various formats, covering all aspects of spine surgery and reaching out to surgeons at every stage of their career. AOSpine courses, symposia and academic congresses provide an opportunity for hands-on learning, alongside constructive discussions with moderators and colleagues in a stimulating environment representative of the community network of AOSpine. AOSpine Fellowships complement this offering, providing budding spine surgeons with the opportunity to work in some of the world’s top spine centers and learn from the best in the field.

The AOSpine Curriculum

The new AOSpine Curriculum is a structured, consistent framework for delivering our educational activities across pathologies based on agreed competencies (specific abilities).

"Each educational event and its audience is different. The challenge is to prepare and deliver content that is appropriate for the level of the participants, within the Curriculum framework."
Germán Ochoa, AOSpine Education Officer International

During 2011 the AOSpine Education Commision (AOSEC), AOSpine International, and the regions will carry out an extensive Curriculum implementation study. A total of 12 educational activities will be involved in this pilot evaluation. Chairs, Educational Directors, faculty, and participants will play key roles in the study. The data gathered and the learning outcomes achieved will provide essential information for the finalization of the AOSpine Curriculum.

After the pilot study, final versions of the Curriculum and a "How-to-implement" guide will be made available to all our faculty and members worldwide. Full integration in all national and regional educational activities will be encouraged and supported.
